One of the outstanding brains ever to be involved with Secret Intelligence work. 'RV' joined SIS (MI6) in 1939 as a Scientific Officer. His first major success came in identifying and helping to produce an effective counter to the German 'beams' used to guide their Bombers onto targets in Britain.

Henceforth Chuchill hailed Jones as his 'boy wonder, the man who broke the bloody beams".  Jones became Assistant Director of Intelligence (Science) and SIS principal scientific adviser and his work on German secret weapons, including the V1 flying bombs and V2 ballistic missiles and on enemy radar's throughout the rest of the war was simply outstanding.  Jones became the Director of Intelligence (Science) in 1946, but did not enjoy the political in fighting it involved, he resigned and became the Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Aberdeen. A brief period as Director of Scientific Intelligence at Churchill's direct insistence in 1952 convinced him of his preference for an Academic life
